Exhibit of Red Dresses to Honor Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women

Come to Shelby Farms Park at the Beaver Lake or Chickasaw Trail and view an exhibition of Red Dresses to Honor the thousands of Indigenous Women and Girls that go missing, are murdered or are victims of violence every year.

May 1st - May 31st
Special Programming on May 5th at the event center.

This is an adaptation of the Red Dress Project created by artist Jaime Black (Anishinaabe and Finnish).

The dresses are hung as a visual reminder of the staggering number of women who are no longer with us. Through the installation we draw attention to the gendered and racialized nature of violent crimes against Indigenous women and to evoke a presence through the marking of absence” - Jaime Black.

The red dress has become a symbol of the MMIW movement and is being used all over the continent to bring more light and action to the tragedy.

We know that we aren’t doing this work alone. We want to support other organizations engaging in anti-colonial, social justice, inclusive work. We want to know if you’re hosting an event aimed at creating a liberated future for all. And we especially want to promote any events that center the cultural, commercial, spiritual, or political needs of Native Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Puerto Ricans. If you’re having an event in the MidSouth region (Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi) please submit it here so we can share it with our community.

We also want to amplify the voice of our community. If you would to invite us to participate at your event, or would like to collaborate, please submit your request HERE as well.
